Aillons-Margériaz The village resort

Aillons-Margériaz
The Baujue resort between village and summits

In the heart of the Massif des Bauges, a UNESCO World Geopark, Aillons-Margériaz combines the authenticity of a lively village with the dynamism of a mountain resort. Here, you’ll find a warm welcome, a family-friendly atmosphere and an abundance of natural beauty. In summer and winter alike, the landscapes, activities and history create a unique experience, shaped by the mountain spirit of the Bauges.

The station today

Nestling in an unspoilt natural setting, the Aillons-Margériaz resort invites you to experience the mountains in a different way. Situated in the commune of Aillon-le-Jeune, at an altitude of 1000 m, it is at the heart of the Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park, a UNESCO World Geopark for its rich natural and geological heritage.

The resort is built around two complementary centres:

Aillons-Margériaz 1000: the lively heart of the village, on a human scale, with a mix of chalets, mountain pasture farms, shops, entertainment and Bauges traditions. There are also hotels and a wide range of accommodation, perfect for putting down your bags and making the most of the village-resort atmosphere. This is where the warm, authentic mountain spirit beats.

Aillons-Margériaz 1400: the ski area, dedicated to skiing and wide open spaces. Family-friendly and accessible, it’s the ideal playground for learning, improving or simply enjoying the snow.
In winter, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and tobogganing are all on offer. In summer, hiking, mountain biking, via ferrata, potholing and zip-lining extend the adventure. A lively, multi-purpose resort, where people come for sport, relaxation… and to experience the Bauju spirit.

History of Aillons-Margériaz Christmas 1964... A date engraved in the history of the Bauges region

The beginnings of Aillon-Station

From the first ski lifts to a booming village

On that day, a bold project took shape in the beating heart of the commune of Aillon-le-Jeune. Far from the big Alpine resorts, this initiative had a single objective: to enable the local inhabitants, farmers and foresters, to supplement their income in winter and stem the rural exodus.

What started out as a modest ski lift would become, over the decades, a warm, family-friendly village resort, embodying the mountain spirit of the Bauges.

1964 – The birth of a resort. The Aillon-le-Jeune Town Council officially launched skiing, installing the very first snow wire and ski lift near La Correrie. The mountain was transformed into a playground for young and old alike.
1968 – Development accelerates. The resort became more structured, with the creation of a road and car parks to make access easier for skiers. New ski lifts were built: Combe aux Biches, l’Aigle, la Crête on Mont Pelat.
1970 – The first residential development was launched with the La Mense housing estate, offering mountain enthusiasts the chance to live in the heart of the Bauges.

A constantly evolving resort

The 1980s marked a decisive turning point: at the instigation of the Savoie Departmental Council, the Margériaz ski area was created, designed for beginners and families. The installation of modern chairlifts accompanied this development and, in 1990, the merger with Aillon-Station gave rise to SEM des Bauges, the sole operator of the two sites.

The following decades reinforced this momentum, with the arrival of the first snow cannons in 1996, the opening of the Roc de Balme detachable chairlift in 1997, and major works in the 2000s to extend the car parks, modernise the reception area and create new play areas. The resort also innovated with the hands-free ski pass, online sales of ski passes and the development of summer activities, such as the zip-line course inaugurated in 2013.

Even today, Aillons-Margériaz continues to evolve, combining village authenticity with innovations to make it easier to discover the mountains whatever the season.

A resort looking to the future

Since its beginnings in 1964, Aillons-Margériaz has never stopped evolving to offer the best of the mountains to those who discover it and to those who return year after year.
Today, the resort continues to grow, combining modernity with respect for its authentic identity. Its ambition: to offer a mountain accessible to all, where nature, winter sports and pleasure come together throughout the seasons.

Twinning Aillon-le-Jeune - Sauzon

Aillon-le-Jeune is twinned with Sauzon, a commune on Belle-Île-en-Mer in Brittany.

Sailors from Brittany and mountaineers from Savoie have forged indelible links in the wake of the Erika oil spill. A few days after the shipwreck, a delegation of 115 Savoyard volunteers travelled to Belle-Île to help the inhabitants clean up their oil-stained coastline. It was during this ordeal that a strong friendship between the two communes was born.

In February 2000, the Savoyard mountaineers used their climbing skills to work on the hard-to-reach cliffs. Their departure a few weeks later sparked the desire to extend this meeting.

In June 2001, the twinning was made official at the Savoie Prefecture, then celebrated in Aillon-le-Jeune and Sauzon. Since then, the exchanges have continued: trips, classes at sea, sharing food and culture.

This twinning is much more than an agreement: it symbolises the solidarity, mutual aid and friendship between Savoyards and Bretons, born of a disaster but transformed into a bright and lasting story.
