Exceptional snow conditions Aillons-Margériaz

Aillons-Margériaz :
where the snow is king all winter long!

Are you wondering why it’s always snowing at Aillons-Margériaz? Why, while other resorts struggle to post a few centimetres of powder, our slopes remain white and generously covered in snow? It’s neither a miracle nor a coincidence, but an exceptional natural asset that makes the Aillons-Margériaz area one of the best snow-covered in France.

Exceptional natural snow cover, well beyond altitude

Contrary to popular belief, altitude alone is not everything when it comes to snow cover. A resort’s geographical position in relation to atmospheric currents plays a much more decisive role. And in this respect, Mont Margériaz is a real snow magnet.

The figures speak for themselves: according to national statistics from Météo France, the Massif des Bauges has the best natural snow cover in France at 1500 m and 1800 m in January, February and March.

But why this abundance of snow?

One location ideal to capture rainfall

Mont Margériaz ‘s geographical location is perfectly aligned with the prevailing moisture-laden winds.

Flows from the West and North-West, rich in precipitation, meet the Margériaz relief as soon as they arrive on the massif. The result? The clouds cling on and dump their flakes in much greater quantities than elsewhere. While other resorts have to wait, here the mountain is naturally covered in a thick white blanket, providing exceptional snow cover all season long.

1Snow that stays white longer
  • At Aillons-Margériaz, the snow keeps its sparkle and quality all winter long.
  • The secret? Ultra-permeable karstic soil full of cavities!
  • When it rains, the water does not stagnate on the slopes, but seeps directly through the limestone rocks of the massif.

Thanks to this natural flow, the water does not stagnate in the snowpack. It is neither soaked with water nor transformed into an icy layer.

2The result?
  • The snow is always soft and light, reflecting the sun better and staying brilliant white for longer.
  • Even after several days of mild weather, our slopes are still the best they can be!
