A journey into the soul of Baujue Aillons-Margériaz

Cultural treasures to explore

Nestling in the heart of the Bauges massif, Les Aillons-Margériaz is bursting with heritage treasures. Savoyard history is evident in the hamlets, chapels, dairy farms and ancient buildings that dot the landscape. In this unspoilt setting, an encounter becomes an open door to the past, an immersion in the skills and traditions that have shaped this region for centuries.

Chapel of la Correrie

Nestling in the heart of the hamlet of La Correrie in Aillon-le-Jeune, the Saint-Michel chapel has watched over the area peacefully since the 15th century. A precious reminder of the Carthusian era, it combines architectural simplicity with hidden treasures.

Its entrance door, framed in carved stone, is adorned with a delicately broken pediment, surmounted by a niche housing a painted metal Sacred Heart. Just above, an elegant bell tower topped by a slender spire gives the whole structure a light, airy silhouette.

Inside, the surprise continues: barrel vault, stained glass window of Saint Bruno, wrought iron communion table… and above all a magnificent 17th century grisaille decoration, rediscovered in 2022, rare in Savoie and of great finesse.

Since 2018, a local association has been working to bring this heritage back to life: guided tours, a music festival… the chapel is coming gently back to life.

Chartreuse d'Aillon The old monastery, a new story to share

Silence, heritage reborn… After a short break of a year, the Chartreuse d’Aillon is reopening its doors and its great heritage heart. Nestling in the Combe des Lourdens in Aillon-le-Jeune, this former Carthusian monastery – built in the 12th century – is once again open to visitors… but in the 21st century!

After a short break, the Chartreuse d’Aillon is reopening its doors with a new lease of life. This place steeped in history is getting ready to host exhibitions, concerts, a botanical garden and a revamped museography. Medicinal plants, fruit trees, the skills of yesteryear: the site awakens both curiosity and sensitivity.

The Chartreuse becomes a place of transmission, creation and inspiration, in a breathtaking setting. The Carthusian monks would have smiled (inwardly).

In this part of the Bauges massif, a veritable jewel case of nature and history, the site also offers guided tours, family workshops and an open-air trail to plunge you into eight centuries of monastic life.

A timeless place to rediscover… without taking a vow of silence!

The Bauges heritage is also one of ancestral skills and the passing on of knowledge. A visit to a traditional cheese dairy gives you a better understanding of how Tome des Bauges PDO cheese is made and the fundamental role played by mountain pastures in local life.

There are demonstrations of production, museum displays, tastings and direct sales.
