  • Challes-les-Eaux

Challes-les-Eaux is a gentle bubble between vineyards and mountains. Nestling at the foot of the Bauges massif, facing the Chartreuse, this former spa town has a rich heritage and beautiful natural surroundings. From the moment you enter, the town welcomes you to a soothing green setting, just a few minutes from the heart of Chambéry.

Its history is closely linked to an astonishing discovery: that of the sulphurous spring that gushed up from the depths in 1841. Dr Domenget, military physician to the Royal House of Savoy, marvelled: “Everything seems phenomenal, Sire, in the Challes spring! This water, one of the most sulphurous in Europe, quickly made the reputation of the resort. It cured, it soothed, it attracted curists and visitors for over 150 years, until 2023, when the spa closed. But here, the soul of the spa is still alive, in the flower-filled lanes, the well-tended parks and the peaceful atmosphere.

Challes-les-Eaux is also an ideal base for getting away from it all. The Leysse plateau opens the way to the trails of the Bauges massif: a stroll to the Trou de l’Enfer, a visit to the Bout du Monde, a climb to Mont Saint-Michel for an imposing panorama of Chambéry. Below, the lake at La Thuile, wild and silent, offers an interlude of calm around its reeds.

But Challes also has its head in the clouds. The aerodrome, one of the oldest in France, is a mecca for gliding. Champions compete here, and visitors can take to the skies for first flights in gliders, aeroplanes or even hot-air balloons. Here, anything is possible: observe the peaks, brush up against the clouds, then come back down to stroll around the market, listen to a concert at the music school or simply enjoy a coffee on the terrace.

Challes-les-Eaux is an art of living, a gateway to the great outdoors, a concentrate of Savoie. A naturally surprising place, where history, serenity and poetic flights of fancy come together. The elixir is here, within easy reach.
