Hiking tip: download the MHIKES app before you set off.

1. Jean-Jacques Rousseau's walk

Green level – very easy / 2h30

Let yourself be carried away by reverie and follow in the footsteps of a solitary walker

Follow in the footsteps of a not-so-lonely walker… Jean-Jacques Rousseau himself! This bucolic walk will take you from park to viewpoint, along paths with names worthy of a novel (Le Rendez-vous, Rosemond, Parc de l’Étincelle). This walk is the perfect way to discover some unusual places, before arriving step by step at Madame de Warens’ home: Les Charmettes, a little green cocoon where the philosopher loved to recharge his batteries.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau stayed here between 1736 and 1742. In his Confessions, he wrote: “Here began the short happiness of my life”… and it’s easy to see why.

The little extra: On the way back, take the chemin de la Fontaine Saint Martin. Unbeatable views over the rooftops of the old town guaranteed.

2. The Coche cross from Chambéry or Saint-Baldoph

Blue level – moderate / 3h30

Want to get a bit of height and take in the sights? This trail takes you through vineyards, chestnut trees and boxwood (make a wish while you’re at it!) to the famous stone cross at La Coche.

This time, your journey begins against a backdrop of undergrowth, vines and chestnut trees. A delight for budding adventurers who want to admire the view of the town below and the surrounding mountains. Then the imposing stone cross of La Coche rises up before you.

The “coche”, in Savoyard dialect, refers to a passageway. It links the villages of Barberaz, Saint-Baldoph and Montagnole… with a breathtaking view of Belledonne, Galoppaz and Mont Saint Michel (no, not the one in Normandy!).

The little extra

Why not take a guided tour? Our mountain guides are happy to share stories, anecdotes and well-kept secrets.

3. The tannes and glaciers trail du Margériaz

Blue level – moderate / 4h30

Here, the ground hides secrets… Beneath your feet are tannes (curious karst holes) and ancient natural glaciers sculpted by time. A perfect hike for explorers curious about geology and wilderness.

There are nine stops along the way, allowing you to discover this surprising and changing environment, with its forests, alpine meadows and sweeping panoramas over the Leysse plateau, the Belledonne massif and the majestic Mont-Blanc.

To get there, head towards Aillons-Margériaz 1400 then park at “Place à Baban”. Then take the forest track and follow the signs.

The little extra

And for the finishing touch… head to the Fromagerie du Val d’Aillon!

After all that effort, it’s time for some Savoyard comfort. On the way back down to Aillon-le-Jeune, take a gourmet break at the cheese dairy. Here, you can follow the thread of taste from the freshly-grazed grass of our beautiful mountain women to the melting Tome des Bauges cheese on your plate.

The museum area shows you all the stages in the production process, in an atmosphere that’s both authentic and fun. And to continue the adventure at home? A little diversions to the shop is in order: local cheeses, local flavours… as many souvenirs to put in your luggage as on your aperitif tray.

Green news

Walking is already a gentle act for the planet. But here, we go even further. At Chambéry Montagnes, every trail is an invitation to explore… without leaving a trace.

🧭 Choose the signposted routes, take your rubbish with you, and leave the flowers where they bloom.
💧 Use a water bottle rather than a plastic bottle.
🐐 If you come across a cow or a herd of cattle, a little diversions is better than unnecessary stress.

And if you’re coming by bus or train? It’s all good. Many of the trailheads are accessible without a car.

Because enjoying nature also means preserving it. Hike smart, hike committed!

4. The Nivolet cross

Green level – easy / 2h30

The not-to-be-missed Croix du Nivolet is accessible to all the family, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t take this hike!

The majestic cross towers 21.50 metres above Chambéry. From the Sire car park, in the Féclaz resort, you can enjoy an extraordinary 360° panorama from this unique promontory: Lac du Bourget, Aix-les-Bains and the Dent du Chat, the Chambéry basin, the Bauges, the Chartreuse, the Belledonne chain and the Jura…

And if the weather is fine and the sky is clear, you’ll be able to see the Aravis mountains and, just behind them, Mont-Blanc.

There are other routes to this great lady, but this is the easiest one for families.

The little extra

Do you dream of flying? Experience the freedom of paragliding or hang-gliding from the Sire take-off area. Yes, yes, even in a two-seater!

5. The Orgeval pass

Red level – difficult / 4h

If you’re a lover of alpine flowers and beautiful scenery, you’re more than welcome on this route, which takes you straight to the Col d’Orgeval (1740 m).

It separates the valleys of Bellevaux and Saint-Ruph and is a crossing point on the route to the summit of Arcalod.

In the heart of the Bauges, this hike requires legs, hiking poles and breath, but above all a capacity for wonder: the setting is simply exceptional.

Starting out from the village of Ecole (Nant Fourchu car park) and heading up to the Orgeval chalets at an altitude of 1,603 metres, you will find yourself in the heart of the National Game and Wildlife Reserve. Here, surrounded by alpine flowers (gentian, bois joli, pansy, orchis…), you may come across chamois and mouflons. Once you reach the Col, you’ll have a breathtaking view of the Saint-Ruph valley, as far as La Tournette, Mont Charvin, Mont de la Coche and the peaks of Chaurionde and La Sambuy.

The little extra

You won’t want to miss the typical village of La Compôte, with its unique architecture emblematic of the Massif des Bauges, where the tavalans can be seen as you wander through the narrow streets. Take the Grangettes valley on your way back to Le Chatelard and then Aillon-le-Jeune, and discover these small buildings that preserve the memory of mountain farming.

6. The Allant cross

Red level – difficult / 4h30

Peaceful pastures, charming hamlets, and a **croix perched** on the summit to welcome you… Welcome to **la croix d’Allant**!

With its circuit along the pastoral tracks of the Bauges, this hike to the Croix d’Allant will amaze lovers of picturesque, almost mysterious landscapes.

Starting out from Jarsy, right in the heart of the Bauges massif, you’ll enjoy the Dent de Pleuven, its hamlets with their maze of stone streets and its “Bauges cathedral”.

Follow the yellow signposts until you reach the first Chargieux chalets, and continue on to the Allant mountain pasture. Behind the chalets, reach the Croix d’Allant for a magnificent panoramic view.

The little extra

Extend your walk to the **Plan de la Limace** to see (perhaps) some marmots on the prowl. The stars don’t like noisy paparazzi…

Return to the GAEC des Neiges chalets and continue north-eastwards to the mountain pasture that leads to the ridge. At the top, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the Pointe de l’Arcalod. With a little patience and a bit of luck, respecting the surrounding silence, you’ll catch a glimpse of the marmots below Mont de la Coche.

7. La Galoppaz

Red level – difficult / 5h

Have you always wanted to see pyramids? Now you can climb one: La Galoppaz, to the south of the Bauges, is instantly recognisable with its little pyramid-shaped summit!

At the top of this 9km loop, which is both challenging and suitable for the more experienced climber, you’ll be greeted not by pharaohs but by cows, giving you the chance to admire an extraordinary view over the Chambéry valley.

From the place known as “le Fournet”, start your journey by descending to the stream before climbing up to the Pointe de la Galoppaz.

The little extra

Leave from Aillon-le-Jeune at the Lindar car park, for a shorter and more accessible hike (520m of positive ascent all the same).

During our mountain escapades, we are nature’s guests… The mountains, RESPECT!

In the mountains, you’re a guest of Mother Nature. And like all good guests, you need to show a little respect! Let’s close the gates, keep our dogs on a lead, and leave the mountain pastures as beautiful as we found them.

The valley and the mountains are places to work and live. A mountain pasture, a meadow or a forest are places where you work every day. They are all used by farmers or foresters. Whether it’s a public or private plot, you’re always in someone’s home!

And to make sure you’re well-equipped, pick up the Chambéry Montagnes hiking maps on sale (€4) at our various tourist information offices.
