Family cycling holidays Chambéry Mountains

Fancy a family holiday where the car stays in the garage?
Welcome to Chambéry Montagnes, an area on a human scale where simple pleasures go hand in hand with freedom and nature. Here, cycling is the perfect way to explore the city, the lush green countryside and the mountain lakes… in complete peace of mind.

A gentle adventure between town and country

From the historic centre of Chambéry, capital of Savoie and gateway to the Alps, you can easily reach the natural areas surrounding the city. Thanks to a well-developed and safe network of cycle paths, the whole family can pedal at their own pace, whether on a conventional bike, an electric-assist bike or in a trailer for the little ones.

You don’t need to be a great sportsman: the valley is almost flat, so the effort is gentle. In less than an hour, you’ll be settled in for a well-deserved picnic on the banks of Lac Saint-André. A leisurely stroll around this peaceful lake is a must, with its backdrop of terraced vineyards, the silhouette of Mont Granier and the first slopes of the Chartreuse massif. A real moment to unwind!

And for the more curious, an introduction to the local flavours is a must: Savoie wines – Chignin, Apremont, Roussette – are best enjoyed in moderation, but with great pleasure. Back in Chambéry, the loop is completed in just 45 minutes.

On the way back, don’t hesitate to stop off in one of the many typical villages along the cycle routes. These little nuggets are full of craftsmen, small farmers’ markets and bucolic cafés where you can take a break, taste a home-made tart or simply chat with the locals. Cycling becomes a real excuse to meet and share.

Chambéry,
a city to discover
by bike

Once back in town, let yourself be seduced by the charm of the Cité des Ducs. With its pedestrianised streets, secret passageways, Italian-influenced facades and lively squares, Chambéry has a rich heritage to explore at your own pace.

Why not push open the door of the Galerie Eurêka? Its space dedicated to the mountains and its temporary exhibitions will captivate young and old alike. And if the skies turn cloudy, it’s also an excellent refuge! If you want to discover more, book a guided tour: a great way to learn the city’s well-kept secrets.

You can also take advantage of the opportunity to discover the local gourmet specialities. Many restaurants and delicatessens offer raclette, crozets and blueberry desserts. Take a stroll through the markets to stock up on cheeses, charcuterie and other delicacies with a mountain flavour.

Well equipped
for smart cycling

No bike? No problem. Chambéry’s Vélostation, just a stone’s throw from the station, offers you a whole range of equipment to suit your needs: classic bikes, VAEs, child seats, trailers… all with the expert advice of two-wheeled professionals.

Before you set off, take the time to equip yourself with a map or a guidance app: several routes are signposted, so you can ride with a clear head. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast and pack a small first-aid kit, snacks and water for the whole family. If you’re well prepared, your holiday will be all the more enjoyable for it!

Set course for
Lac du Bourget

Another must-do during your stay: the bike ride to Lac du Bourget. Accessible in less than 45 minutes from the centre of Chambéry via the voie verte, this family outing takes you to the shores of France’s largest natural lake. The route is flat, peaceful and dotted with superb viewpoints. With your camera or mobile phone at the ready, you’re sure to get plenty of shots!

Once there, you can put the bikes down and enjoy a moment of relaxation by the water: swimming in summer, picnicking on the lawns or playing with the kids. There are several beaches within easy reach, as well as restaurants and ice-cream parlours lining the promenade.

And if you still have some energy left, extend your adventure to Aix-les-Bains. A further 30 minutes along the lakeside greenway will take you to another facet of the region: spas, beaches and the art of living await you. Don’t forget to make a stop along the Promenade Lamartine, an emblematic and highly romantic spot.

Bike Park and
mountain biking

At La Féclaz, downhill enthusiasts will find what they’re looking for in a Bike Park built for adrenalin. From the summit of Orionde, five DH trails (green, two blue, red and black) roll out their bends, jumps and modules over a 200m drop. All accessible by mountain bike, electric bike or fatbike, thanks to the specially-equipped Orionde chairlift.

La Féclaz also has 160km of signposted trails.

The discovery trails (45 km) offer a gentle immersion along wide forest paths, perfect for mountain bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes or mountain bikes.
The advanced routes (115km) are technically challenging, with challenging singles, steep gradients and challenging sections… a real playground for experienced mountain bikers. Several routes even have the FFC label, a guarantee of quality and safety.

To help you find your way around, the Savoie Grand Revard mountain bike map is available from the Tourist Office. And if you want to progress with confidence, there are mountain bike schools offering courses, lessons and accompanied outings for all ages and levels.
