Rules for Bivouacs in the Bauges Chambéry Mountains

Bivouac in the Bauges :
a wild interlude under the stars

The sun is setting behind the ridges, a gentle breeze is blowing down from the mountain pastures, and the first stars are already coming out… In the Bauges massif, bivouacking is more than just a place to sleep: it’s a gentle, respectful immersion in a living natural environment. Here, you take your time. To look, to listen, to feel. And above all, to preserve.

Before you pitch your tent, here are a few essential points of reference to help you enjoy a night in harmony with this unspoilt land.

The golden rules of bivouacking in the Bauges

Bivouacs are tolerated, but only under certain conditions. In a mountain range where nature is both fragile and hard-worked, every gesture counts.

1Obtaining the owner's agreement
  • In 85% of the country, national regulations apply. This means that it is essential to ask the owner or farmer for permission. It's a simple process, and a great way to engage in discussion with those who keep the mountains alive.
2Limiting the duration of bivouacs
  • A bivouac is a stage, not a camp. A single night, with a tent pitched at sunset and folded up at sunrise. Just enough to soak up the atmosphere, without imposing.
3Choosing a suitable location
  • Favour open spaces, away from dwellings, refuges or shelters.
Leave the high meadows to the cows: their hay is precious.
Be discreet, so as not to disturb either animals or people.

4Preserving the beauty of the site
  • Take all your rubbish with you, even peelings.
Use a stove: avoid open fires, even small ones.

5Respect regulated & recommended sites
  • In some areas, bivouacking is strictly regulated or strictly forbidden. Others offer specially equipped areas where you can combine adventure with serenity.

Bivouac areas

Nordicéa

Saint-François-de-Sales

Perfect for first-timers: Nordicéa offers a gentle, accessible bivouac area with 3 pitches on bare ground, a toilet block, children’s play equipment, a restaurant area and a water point. Located just a stone’s throw from signposted footpaths, it’s the ideal place for an introduction to bivouacking or a family holiday. You’ll be greeted with a warm welcome and a guaranteed natural ambience.

Hike and bivouac
du Margériaz

Place à Baban

A demanding itinerary for experienced hikers, with a two-day loop and a section through the spectacular Golet de l’Agneau (equipped section). Halfway along the route, the Place à Baban bivouac area offers 3 pitches, a wooden floor, a hut fitted out as a dining area (with table, stove, open shelter), and dry toilets. A great way to immerse yourself in the heart of the Massif, in complete autonomy. Please note: the hut is not accommodation, it’s a place for cooking and shelter… but you sleep in a tent!

Refuge de la Combe

Aillons-Margériaz

Close to the Nordic ski area, this refuge is accessible on foot and has an authorised outdoor area for bivouacs. If you book in advance, you can spend the night under the stars and still have access to certain services. A comfortable, supervised alternative, ideal for a semi-autonomous bivouac.

Information from the Aillons-Margériaz Tourist Office.

Tips for a successful night

1Lighten your bag
  • A compact tent and the bare essentials are all you need.
2Keep an eye on the weather
  • It changes quickly, even in summer.
3Respect wildlife
  • Observe without approaching. At night, everything can be heard.
4Leave the place spotless, with no sign of you having been there
  • It's the best sign of respect.
5Accompanied hiking
  • Going with a mountain leader is an excellent way to discover the Bauges in a different way, with advice, adapted itineraries and a shared experience in complete safety.
