Challes-les-Eaux, vineyards and art of living

Between spa history, vineyards and quality of life

Just south of Chambéry, Challes-les-Eaux is the epitome of discreet elegance. Nestling in the foothills of the Bauges Massif, this human-sized commune has an appealing location, a gentle way of life and an exceptional natural environment.

Away from the hustle and bustle but close to the town, Challes cultivates a peaceful way of life, with its spa memories, wine-growing traditions and vibrant local life.

A land marked by water and care

Challes-les-Eaux built its reputation in the 19th century around its sulphurous mineral spring, one of the richest in Europe. Although the spa closed its doors in 2023, the town’s spa heritage is still very much a part of its identity, with its wooded park and Belle Époque architecture.

This tradition of health care has shaped a town focused on well-being and lifestyle. Today, the town continues to develop services, walkways and sports and cultural facilities that enhance this quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

A sunny vineyard to discover on foot or by bike

Challes-les-Eaux is also a land of vines. On the south-facing slopes, the wine-growing hillsides blossom under the gaze of the Bauges mountains. Typically Savoyard grape varieties such as Mondeuse, Jacquère and Altesse are carefully cultivated to produce fine, expressive wines.

You can explore these landscapes at your own pace: a number of walking and cycling trails criss-cross the area, passing through the wine estates and surrounding hamlets. Winegrowers will be delighted to welcome you for a tasting, a cellar tour or simply a chat about their passion.

A lively and welcoming community

Today, Challes-les-Eaux is much more than just a pretty setting: it’s a dynamic town, with markets, concerts, cultural events and friendly get-togethers all year round. The town has a wide range of services (media library, sports complex, cultural centre, etc.), and is well connected to Chambéry by public transport, cycle paths and footpaths.

It’s an ideal place to stop off for a stroll, a family outing or a gourmet break on a terrace overlooking the vineyards.

Challes-les-Eaux and Chambéry : a harmonious duo

Challes-les-Eaux, a town of water, wine-growing land, mountain landscape and peaceful residential setting, embodies an intimate and luminous side of Chambéry Montagnes. It’s the southern gateway to the region, bathed in sunshine, looking out onto the hillsides, steeped in tradition… but looking to the future.
