In Chambéry Montagnes, books set the pace. All year round, they bring people together, provoke thought and inspire wonder. You simply cannot miss these events, which bring the region to life.

In Chambéry Montagnes, bookshops are much more than just shops. They are places full of life, advice and new discoveries. You go in for a book, but you stay for the atmosphere and the conversations…
You take the time to browse, have a chat and let yourself be guided. And often, without really realising it, you leave with much more than just a book.

La Lanterne qui Rugit is as much an experience as it is a read. You choose a novel or a comic, then settle down with a coffee and a homemade cake… and time slows down.
All around, people are chatting, flicking through books, and sometimes playing games. On the shelves, a varied selection of books; on the tables, games and stationery.
And regularly, a reading, a workshop or a meet-up extends the experience.
In the heart of Chambéry, just a stone’s throw from the famous ‘quatre sans culs’, the Librairie Garin has been a fixture on the high street for over 70 years.
Stepping inside feels like entering a place that has stood the test of time. The walls tell a story, whilst the shelves bring hundreds more to life.
Generations come and go, traditions are passed on, and the advice remains invaluable.

Guided Literature Tour 04

As night falls, the city takes on a new look… and stories come to life.
As you wander through the narrow streets and past the monuments, let yourself be guided by literary tales that resonate with the surroundings. George Sand, Montaigne, Rousseau and even Stendhal whisper their impressions of Chambéry to you.
A tour between light and shadow, where the city is discovered as much as it is listened to.

In the 18th century, Jean-Jacques Rousseau had close ties with Chambéry. He spent several years there and found it to be much more than just a place he passed through.
At Les Charmettes, he discovered a true refuge, surrounded by nature, reading and reflection.
But the town itself, its landscapes and its atmosphere also nourished his thinking and his journey. A formative period that would leave a deep mark on his work.
