Challes-les-Eaux, vineyards and the art of living

A blend of spa heritage, vineyards and quality of life

At the southern entrance to Chambéry, Challes-les-Eaux epitomises understated elegance. Nestled in the foothills of the Bauges massif, this intimate town charms visitors with its location, its relaxed way of life and its exceptional natural surroundings.

Far from the hustle and bustle yet close to the city, “Challes” cultivates a peaceful way of life, blending its thermal heritage, wine-growing traditions and a vibrant local community.

A land shaped by water and care

It was in the 19th century that Challes-les-Eaux built its reputation on its sulphurous mineral spring, one of the richest in Europe. Although the spa closed its doors in 2023, the town’s spa heritage remains very much part of its identity: a wooded park, Belle Époque architecture…

This tradition of wellness has shaped a town focused on wellbeing and quality of life. Today, the town continues to develop services, walking areas, and sports and cultural facilities that enhance this quality of life for both residents and visitors.

A sun-drenched vineyard to explore on foot or by bike

Challes-les-Eaux is also a wine-growing region. On the south-facing slopes, the vineyards flourish beneath the watchful eye of the Bauges mountains. Here, typical Savoyard grape varieties are carefully cultivated: Mondeuse, Jacquère and Altesse, which produce fine, expressive wines.

You can explore these landscapes at your own pace: several walking and cycling routes criss-cross the area, passing through the vineyards and surrounding hamlets. The winegrowers will be delighted to welcome you for a tasting, a tour of their cellars, or simply a chat about their passion.

A lively and welcoming town

Today, Challes-les-Eaux is much more than just a picturesque setting: it is a vibrant town, bustling all year round with markets, concerts, cultural events and friendly get-togethers. The town offers a wide range of facilities (a media library, sports centre, cultural centre, etc.) and is very well connected to Chambéry via public transport, cycle paths and pedestrian and cycle routes.

It’s an ideal stop-off for a leisurely stroll, a family walk, or a gourmet break on a terrace overlooking the vineyards.

Challes-les-Eaux and Chambéry: a harmonious duo

With its combination of spa town, wine-growing region, mountainous landscape and peaceful residential setting, Challes-les-Eaux embodies an intimate and sun-drenched side of Chambéry Montagnes. It is the southern gateway to the region, bathed in sunshine, facing the hillsides, steeped in tradition… yet looking to the future.
