Tastings, get-togethers, evenings out or gourmet walks… wine becomes an experience to be savoured.
Although little known to the general public, Savoie boasts one of France’s oldest wine-growing traditions. Vines have been grown there for over 2,600 years. As early as the Middle Ages, monks organised the vineyards and laid the foundations for a sustainable tradition of winemaking.
From the 16th to the 18th century, vineyards expanded significantly, sometimes reaching altitudes of over 1,000 metres, shaping the landscape.
In 1860, the region’s annexation by France upset the balance, with local wines having to compete with those from the south. Seventeen years later, phylloxera struck in turn, threatening a whole section of the Savoyard vineyards.

But the Savoyard vineyard has real character. In the post-war period, it was revitalised, driven by modernised techniques and the dedication of its winegrowers. The quality became increasingly recognised, culminating in the 1973 AOC designation ‘Vins de Savoie’.
Today, the vineyards focus on the most favourable terroirs to produce expressive and authentic wines. At the Maison de la Vigne et du Vin, professionals and enthusiasts work every day to keep this expertise alive and promote it far and wide.

Savoyard wines owe their distinctive character to their grape varieties, which are particularly well suited to the climate and the limestone subsoil.
As the second most important agricultural activity in Savoie after cheese production, Savoie’s wine-growing industry comprises 25 grape varieties, which are used to produce 21 distinctive geographical designations (formerly known as ‘crus’).
