Before the peaks, the Chartreuse begins here. Near Chambéry, the foothills offer a gentle and accessible introduction to the mountains, where the landscape is easy to explore.
From Saint-Sulpice to Vimines, from Montagnole to Cognin, via Saint-Cassin, Barberaz and Saint-Baldoph, a string of villages marks this transition from town to countryside. Here, the landscapes gradually open up: vineyards give way to the first forests, the roads become more winding, and the horizons widen without ever feeling abrupt.

To the south, Mont Granier looms large. Its spectacular landslide in 1248 transformed the landscape and left a lasting mark on people’s memories. Even today, its cliffs bear witness to this raw power, caught between instability and striking beauty. At the foot of the massif, the vineyards of Saint-Baldoph continue this intimate connection with the land, shaped by time and events.
To the west, the Épine massif tells a different story: that of passage. Since ancient times, these hills have been crossed to link the valleys. In the 18th century, the Sarde Road came to define this strategic route between Chambéry and Lyon, facilitating the movement of people and goods across the mountains.
Between the force of the elements and the paths trodden by travellers, the Chartreuse Foothills reveal themselves as a living land. A land where the rock holds the memory of the traces of what has shaped it… and of those who have passed through it.
