‘Chambéry, Quelle Histoire!’ is a travelling street theatre production, featuring 20 actors and 3 musicians. For two hours, the audience moves from scene to scene, following a plot that blends humour, emotion and suspense.
Chambéry’s iconic landmarks serve as backdrops, but that’s not all: the performers have created astonishing set pieces, such as the mysterious door, which add a touch of magic and surprise to the experience.

After the end of the first scene, at the Monseigneur Garnier passage, the audience splits into two groups:
The Red Route: ‘Detective Story’
This takes the audience into the Chambéry of the elite and the bourgeoisie. The secrets of the powerful, political life and the arrival of the President of the Republic, Armand Fallières – who has come to unveil the statue of Rousseau – all serve to disrupt the established order.
The Green Trail: ‘Mystery Story’
This delves into a more esoteric world. Spiritualism, ancient legends and obscure curses complicate the investigation into the disappearance of François Descôtes, a Chambéry lawyer found dead in 1908. The unsettling role of a porcelain restorer or the shadows cast by a debauched clergyman leave a sense of unsettling uncertainty hanging in the air.
I was born in Chambéry and I thought I knew its history… but I learnt so much! And above all, it’s told with such enthusiasm that you never want it to end. Seeing your own town brought to life like that is quite moving. You can also sense a real bond between the actors – a lovely harmony that makes the show even more enjoyable to watch.
Every encounter is a surprise, such is the variety and charm of the characters.
Commissioner Chabert leads the investigation, assisted by his eccentric inspector Pignola, whilst Henri Bordeaux observes the city with a touch of irony. Jules Carret, a learned archaeologist, crosses paths with Apollonie, a dreamy poet, and La Hibou, an unsettling porcelain restorer. François Descotes, a respected local figure, collapses at the heart of the plot, under the watchful eye of Ernest Veyrat, the lively mayor. We also meet Madame Mendrillon, the matchmaker; Félix Grenouillet, the ambiguous insurance agent; Félicie, the café owner; and Lagoutte, the talkative drunkard.
All these characters – real or imagined – form a delightful tapestry, blending fantasy, mystery and flashes of truth.

Between scenes, the procession is set to the rhythm of live music from the Piedmont of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The characters continue to interact with the audience, dropping hints or delivering witty jibes, further enhancing the immersive experience.
And every Friday, the evening culminates in a grand finale with a public dance in the courtyard of the Waldeck-Rousseau school. Blanche, a professional dancer, teaches the dance steps, accompanied by Célestine’s vocals and the musicians Yann and Élie. A lively, open-air dance atmosphere where everyone eventually joins in the dancing.
