The resort today

Nestled in a setting of unspoilt nature, the Aillons Margériaz resort invites you to experience the mountains in a different way. It is situated in the heart of the Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park, designated a UNESCO Global Geopark for the richness of its natural and geological heritage.

The resort is centred around two complementary areas:

Val d’Aillon (Aillons-Margériaz 1000): the vibrant heart of the village, on a human scale, where chalets, alpine farms, shops, entertainment and Bauges traditions all come together. You’ll also find hotels and a wide range of accommodation options here, perfect for settling in and making the most of the resort-village atmosphere. It is here that the authentic and warm-hearted mountain spirit truly comes to life.

Margériaz (Aillons-Margériaz 1400): the ski area, focused on skiing and wide-open spaces. Family-friendly, welcoming and accessible, it offers an ideal playground for learning, improving or simply enjoying the snow.

The Aillons Margériaz resort is versatile and lively, a place where people come for sport, relaxation… and to experience the Bauju spirit.

In winter: downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledging and tobogganing are sure to delight everyone.

The early days of Aillon-Station

From the first ski lifts to a booming village

On that day, a bold project was taking shape in the bustling heart of the commune of Aillon-le-Jeune. Far from the major Alpine resorts, this initiative had just one aim: to enable the local residents – farmers and foresters – to supplement their income in winter and stem the rural exodus.

What began as a modest ski lift would, over the decades, become a warm and family-friendly village resort, embodying the mountain spirit of the Bauges.

1964 – The birth of a resort. The Aillon-le-Jeune Town Council officially launched skiing, installing the very first rope tow and ski lift near La Correrie. The mountain was transformed into a playground for young and old alike.
1968 – Development gathers pace. The resort takes shape with the construction of a road and car parks, making it easier for skiers to get there. New ski lifts are built: Combe aux Biches, l’Aigle and la Crête on Mont Pelat.
1970 – The first residential development was launched with the Mense housing estate, offering mountain enthusiasts the chance to settle in the heart of the Bauges.

A resort in constant evolution

The 1980s marked a decisive turning point: under the impetus of the Savoie General Council, the Margériaz ski area was created, designed to introduce people to skiing and cater for families. The installation of modern chairlifts accompanied this development and, in 1990, the merger with Aillon-Station led to the creation of SEM des Bauges, the sole operator of both resorts.

The following decades built on this momentum: the arrival of the first snow cannons in 1996, the commissioning of the detachable chairlift at Roc de Balme in 1997, and major works in the 2000s, including the expansion of car parks, the modernisation of the visitor centre and the creation of new recreational areas. The resort has also pioneered innovations such as the ‘hands-free’ ski pass, online ski pass sales and the development of summer activities, such as the zip-line course opened in 2013.

Even today, Aillons Margériaz continues to evolve, striking a balance between authentic village charm and innovations designed to make exploring the mountains easier all year round.

A resort looking to the future

Since its inception in 1964, Aillons Margériaz has continued to evolve, offering the very best of the mountains to both first-time visitors and those who return year after year.
Today, the resort continues to grow, striking a balance between modernity and respect for its authentic identity. Its ambition is to offer a mountain that is accessible to all, where nature, winter sports and enjoyment come together throughout the seasons.

The twinning scheme Aillon-le-Jeune – Sauzon

Aillon-le-Jeune is twinned with Sauzon, a commune on Belle-Île-en-Mer in Brittany.

Breton sailors and Savoyard mountain dwellers forged unbreakable bonds in the wake of the Erika oil spill. A few days after the shipwreck, a delegation of 115 volunteers from Savoy travelled to Belle-Île to help the locals clean up their oil-polluted coastline. It was during this ordeal that a strong friendship between the two towns was forged.

In February 2000, the Savoyard mountaineers, drawing on their climbing skills, were able to work on the hard-to-reach cliffs. Their departure a few weeks later sparked a desire to continue this partnership.

In June 2001, the twinning was formalised at the Savoie Prefecture, then celebrated in Aillon-le-Jeune and Sauzon. Since then, exchanges have continued: trips, school seaside holidays, and shared culinary and cultural experiences.

This twinning is much more than an agreement: it symbolises solidarity, mutual support and friendship between the people of Savoie and Brittany – a bond born of a disaster but transformed into a bright and enduring story.
