A journey into the soul of the Bauges Margériaz Aillons

Nestled in the heart of the hamlet of La Correrie in Aillon-le-Jeune, the Chapel of Saint-Michel has stood peacefully guarding the area since the 15th century. A precious reminder of the Carthusian era, it combines architectural simplicity with little hidden treasures.

Its entrance door, framed by cut stone, is adorned with a delicately stepped pediment, surmounted by a niche housing a painted metal Sacred Heart. Just above it, an elegant bell turret topped with a slender spire lends the whole structure a light and airy silhouette.

Inside, the surprises continue: a barrel vault, a stained-glass window depicting Saint Bruno, a wrought-iron communion table… and, above all, a magnificent 17th-century grisaille decoration, rediscovered in 2022, which is rare in Savoie and of great finesse.

Since 2018, a local association has been working to breathe new life into this heritage: guided tours, a music festival… the chapel is gently coming back to life.

Nestled in the Combe des Lourdens in Aillon-le-Jeune, this former Carthusian monastery – built in the 12th century – is returning to its role as a place of welcome… but with a 21st-century twist!

After a brief hiatus, the Chartreuse d’Aillon reopens its doors with a new lease of life. This place steeped in history is set to host exhibitions, concerts, a botanical garden and a revamped museum experience. Medicinal plants, fruit trees, traditional craftsmanship: the site sparks both curiosity and emotion.

The Chartreuse is becoming a place of learning, creativity and inspiration, set against a breathtaking backdrop. The Carthusian monks would have smiled (to themselves).

In this part of the Bauges massif, a veritable treasure trove of nature and history, the site also offers guided tours, family workshops and an outdoor trail to immerse visitors in eight centuries of monastic life.

A place outside the reach of time, waiting to be rediscovered… without having to take a vow of silence!

The heritage of the Bauges region is also characterised by time-honoured traditions and the passing down of skills. A visit to a traditional dairy offers a better understanding of how Tome des Bauges AOP is made and the vital role of the mountain pastures in local life.
