Are you wondering why there’s always plenty of snow in Aillons Margériaz? Why, whilst other resorts struggle to muster even a few centimetres of powder, do our slopes remain white and generously covered in snow? It’s neither a miracle nor a coincidence, but an exceptional natural asset that makes the Aillons Margériaz ski area one of the best-snowed-for in France.

Exceptional natural snow cover, far beyond altitude

Contrary to popular belief, altitude alone is not the be-all and end-all when it comes to snow cover. A resort’s geographical position in relation to atmospheric currents plays a far more decisive role. And in that respect, Mont Margériaz is a real magnet for snowflakes.

The figures speak for themselves: according to national statistics from Météo France, the Bauges Massif boasts the best natural snow cover in France at altitudes of 1,500 m and 1,800 m in January, February and March.

A pitch ideal to collect rainfall

Mont Margériaz is situated in a location that is perfectly aligned with the prevailing winds, which carry a great deal of moisture.

Winds from the west and north-west, rich in precipitation, encounter the Margériaz range as soon as they reach the massif. The result? The clouds linger and dump snowflakes in far greater quantities than elsewhere. Whilst other resorts have to wait, here the mountain is naturally blanketed in a thick layer of snow, providing exceptional snow cover throughout the season.

Snow that stays white for longer

In Aillons Margériaz, the snow retains its brilliance and quality throughout the winter.
The secret? An ultra-permeable karst soil full of cavities!
When it rains, the water does not pool on the slopes, but seeps directly through the limestone rocks of the massif.
Thanks to this natural drainage, water does not pool in the snowpack. It is neither waterlogged nor transformed into a layer of ice.

The result?

Snow that remains soft and light, reflecting the sun’s rays more effectively and staying brilliantly white for longer.
Even after several days of milder weather, our slopes are still in top condition!
